U.S. Figure Skating, the national governing body for the sport in the United States, recently launched its Centennial Celebration. Founded in 1921, U.S. Figure Skating is one of the first U.S. Olympic sport governing bodies to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Throughout the year and culminating with the 2022 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Nashville, Tennessee, the Centennial Celebration will spotlight figure skating’s everyday heroes, its iconic and inspirational athletes, the vital networks that support skaters and members clubs across the nation.
Officially founded on April 4, 1921, there were seven charter members clubs of the organization. U.S. Figure Skating, which currently boasts more than 600 clubs and 1,000 Learn to Skate USA programs in cities and towns across all 50 States, has helped more than 3 million people take to the ice via its Learn to Skate USA curriculum. Follow U.S. Figure Skating’s coverage of the Centennial Celebration at USFigureSkating100.org.
Morry Stillwell, president of US Figure Skating from 1995 to 1998, and many, many years as a US Figure Skating official at SDFSC events, passed away on Dec. 25, 2020. He was 93 years old. He is survived by his wife, Elda, who has also served the SDFSC as an official, and his daughter Lisa.
US Figure Skating post captures other accomplishments. The SDFSC has made a donation to the US Figure Skating Memorial Fund in memory of Morry Stillwell.
Elda & Morry Stillwell (1954)
Residing in Fallbrook, California, he was a national singles/pairs and national showcase judge, a national singles/pairs and national showcase referee, and a nonqualifying singles technical controller. He served as an official for U.S. Figure Skating since 1951.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
The SDFSC Board of Directors hopes each of our figure skating families is healthy and safe in these difficult times. Like everyone else, we are monitoring the directions provided by the state, county, and city officials and looking forward to the day when we can safely return to the ice.
When we do return, things will come back slowly and differently. It will take time for skaters to return to where they were in skills and abilities. It will take time for coaches to get to all their students and have them ready for the next test and/or competition. Taking all of this into consideration, the board has decided to change/cancel additional upcoming events:
The May and June Test Sessions are canceled. Existing registrations moved to July.
The SDFSC Annual Meeting will be held through an online video conference. Elections and voting will be completed electronically, details by the end of May.
The 2020 Skate La Grande competition is canceled. We won’t want to gather in crowds, nor will people have had enough ice time to be ready.
2020-2021 Membership renewal will be proceeding in June to ensure we are prepared when the rinks open again.
Updates to previously announced changes:
The Road to Gold training camp was postponed. Exploring dates in late August and December. New date TBD.
Synchronized Skating Tryout was postponed. New date TBD.
The April Test Session was canceled. Next test session now July.
The Governing Council has been postponed until May 15-16, 2020, and will be conducted as virtual meetings with electronic voting. Besides the usual long list of potential rules changes, there will undoubtedly be discussions and guidance for the resumption of future events.
UPDATE: 03/24/2020 – U.S. Figure Skating has further canceled events until May 11, 2020. SDFSC will continue to monitor and change scheduled events as necessary.
As of this morning, U.S. Figure Skating strongly recommends that all club events and programs (competitions, test sessions, shows, etc.) are canceled or postponed through at least April 12. The San Diego FSC believes this is a prudent precaution to help our country control the spread of the COVID-19. As a result:
The Road to Gold training camp is postponed.
Synchronized Skating Tryout is postponed.
The April Test Session is canceled, and all entries will be moved to the May Test Session.
You can either choose to keep your reserved spot or request a full refund. Email the appropriate chair if you want to receive a refund. Road to Gold is roadtogold@sandiegofsc.org, for Test Session email testing@sandiegofsc.org.
We hope that all of our figure skating family remains safe.
